I read quite a lot of books when my last relationship broke up. I really had thought he was ‘the one’. I thought I was ‘the one’ for him, in fact he told me I was so imagine my shock when it didn’t work out. I had to know why and what to do.
The first book I read was given to me buy a friend who knew I was a ‘Sex and the city’ fan. So big that I had the complete box set. Anybody who knows ‘Sex and the city’ knows the line – ‘he’s just not that into you’. The book has that as the title because it is written by Greg Behrendt, a writer from the TV series and Liz Tuccillo. It also has a subtitle of ‘The No Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys’. Intriguing title. I was sure I would find the answer to why my ex hadn’t wanted to commit to a relationship with me.
The first thing to say about this book is that it is a really good read. It is written in an entertaining, conversational style that flows well. This is absolutely essential when you are in the aftermath of a relationship because your brain is mush. Concentrating is difficult so a clearly laid out, fun book is important. Next thing you know, a couple of hours has gone past and you haven’t thought too much about your ex. Well worth the price of a book!
The second thing to say is that it pulls no punches but says it as it is. Now you may not want to hear some things if you are suffering from a broken heart but, in the long run, you will see they are right. If you don’t want to hear those things then go to your girlfriends, but in the end you NEED to hear them.
Thirdly, Liz and Greg take all those classic situations and point out the obvious to you but do it with humor. Like ‘He’s just not that into you if he’s not dating you’ or ‘He’s just not that into you if he’s breaking up with you’. Or as in my case, it was more ‘He’s just not that into you if he’s having sex with someone else’. Sometimes it is better when it comes in print rather than from a friend.
Finally, the book basically works up to telling you that you deserve better, that you are an amazing person and owe yourself that fulfilling relationship. It doesn’t promise you will meet Mr or Ms ‘The One’, but it tells you how not to waste your time investing in a relationship that is going nowhere.
Would I recommend it? Definitely. So much so that I bought it for a couple of girlfriends as soon as I’d finished, I wasn’t giving them my copy
